BULLDOG COUSINS REMAINS UNITED IN RED
When it comes to supporting Centennial, it can be said that these ladies “bleed red.”
For at least the past 15 years, cousins Pat Craig (Class of 1957), Shirley Hiler (Class of 1958) and Linda Burton (Class of 1967) have supported their alma mater by proudly selling Bulldog-themed T-shirts and other wares during special events, such as Bell Game Week and Hall of Fame dinners.
When the ribbon on the new Centennial was cut Monday, the trio was hard at work, making sure that visitors remembered the occasion by taking home a red-hued shirt.
“How did we get started helping to sell T-shirts? Well, I volunteered all three of us,” Shirley said. “I was bored, so I volunteered. And I volunteered them too.”
In its various incarnations, Centennial has been a home away from home for the ladies.
“I have always loved Centennial,” Pat said. “I loved being in the old building, when it was downtown.”
“And this new building looks beautiful,” Linda noted. “I want to take a tour now.”
Although Monday’s business wasn’t as brisk as the ladies would have liked – “most people didn’t come prepared to buy anything, just tour the school,” Linda said – sales are expected to pick up once the school’s museum is re-established.
“And if they’ll have us, we will continue to help out and sell,” Shirley said. “When the Bell Game comes around, we are going to be there.
“They know that if they need help, they call the three old ladies, and we show up.”
Collectively, 12 members of the families of Pat, Shirley and Linda have followed in their footsteps and become part of Centennial’s alumni family.
“As far as we are concerned, there is no other school but Centennial,” Pat said.
