HURLIMAN SCHOLAR PROFILE: IAN IMES
Ian, an East Eagle, received a one-year Hurliman Scholarship up to $15,000.
This season, Ian served as captain of the tennis team and has participated in swimming, choir, Key Club, Speech and Debate, and National Honor Society, serving as president.
Within the community, Ian is a lifeguard and a volunteer for Sangre de Cristo Community Care hospice.
“I have no idea why I was selected for the Hurliman Scholarship but during my interview, I did feel very happy, confident, and blessed to be there,” Ian said. “So maybe that showed through and worked in my favor. Either way, I’m very grateful to the scholarship foundation for awarding me with this scholarship, and it is greatly appreciated.”
Throughout his education, Ian said the role his teachers have played cannot be understated.
“All of the educators I have had the pleasure to be taught by have played a role in me being a scholar today,” Ian said. “But I would have to say that the educators at East have instilled confidence within me to reach for my goals and apply myself to be a well-rounded and confident student.”
Ian plans to attend Hawai’i Pacific University on the island of Oahu, where he will study nursing.
“I also have been awarded the Presidential Scholarship from my university, which is also very amazing and I’m very grateful for that as well,” Ian said.
As he prepares for the next step in his life, Ian expressed appreciation for all who have been there along the way.
“I would just like to thank all of the teachers who have helped me achieve this monumental goal,” he said. “I would also like to thank my family for always supporting me. Lastly, I would like to thank my community for supporting me and allowing me to grow and learn.
“I am very grateful.”
