NEW FRANKLIN, SUNSET PARK AND K-8 EXPEDITIONARY SCHOOL FOCUS OF VIRTUAL TOWN HALL
At no additional cost to taxpayers who approved the 2019 bond, District 60, and the community at large, will soon benefit from new buildings to replace Franklin School of Innovation and Sunset Park Elementary, and a new K-8 Expeditionary School to be built on the former Heroes K-8 Academy campus.
And at 6 p.m. Wednesday, a virtual town hall will allow stakeholders an inside look at the features and amenities of this trio of state-of-the-art facilities and offer the opportunity to question the facilitators in real time.
Through favorable bond conditions, the receipt of two BEST Grants, and strict oversight of the construction process, the District is able to build three new schools in addition to the new East and Centennial that served as the cornerstone of the historic $218 million bond.
Through the virtual town hall hosted by Jack Mousseau of MOA Architecture, participants will learn about floor plans, and both exterior and interior building design features, of the new builds and the campus layout.
With a planned 55,603 square feet, the new Sunset Park and Franklin buildings will see a notable amount of space added to the existing layouts.
At both buildings, a high-performance design approach will incorporate energy efficiency – variable refrigerant mechanical system with energy savings – and a focus on healthy environments through enhanced mechanical filtration and the flow of outside fresh air to classrooms.
Through clearstories in learning pods, entry, dining commons area and Discovery Center, ample day lighting will be a hallmark.
Energy-efficient lighting – with LED lighting/color tunable lights in the Special Education (SPED) space – will be complemented by enhanced acoustic performance.
The building design for each school includes areas for art, music and projects, with a Discovery Commons area. Students will have use of small group spaces, a gym, stage and dining commons area.
In each building, the activity/commons area will be accessible from each classroom.
The targeted student capacity for each school is 451 students.
As for the K-8 Expeditionary School, the features that will mark the new Sunset Park and Franklin be included in the design, along with the following features:
A Career and Technical Education lab; projects lab; science labs; spaces for art and music; a Discovery Commons and projects area; and auxiliary gym.
The existing gymnasium will be utilized as an auxiliary gymnasium, with the playing field incorporated into the external design.
With square footage of 73,837, the K-8 school will have capacity for 675 students.
