New K-12 Online School Accepting Enrollment Through June 30
Designed to capitalize on the remote learning innovations implemented during the pandemic and provide families with an additional educational opportunity, the new District 60 K-12 Online School is accepting enrollment through June 30.
District 60 K-12 Online School will allow students to learn from the comfort of their homes while enjoying the full D60 educational experience.
“We are excited to add this new instructional option to our D60 portfolio of schools,” said Suzanne Morey, the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Services. “It is a fully online school available to any student.”
District 60 K-12 Online students will follow the same D60 school calendar and 4-day student week. Those students currently enrolled in a brick-and-mortar District school who wish to attend will be required to formally transfer.
The District 60 K-12 Online School should not be viewed as a “temporary” or “stopgap” destination. Students should be ready to make a long-term commitment to their education in this format.
The District 60 K-12 Online School will be staffed by licensed District teachers and administrators and employ Edgenuity: a high-quality curriculum aligned with state and national standards and specifically designed for the online learning format.
Edgenuity is not a self-paced online learning experience and as such, students will not be able to bypass content in order to move quickly through courses. Students will be expected to keep pace with the scope and sequence provided by the teacher.
Students will be expected to log into and complete their class assignments every student contact day within the D60 calendar and be expected to attend all synchronous lessons and meetings with their teacher(s) at the scheduled date and time.
Student academic performance is directly related to regular student attendance and therefore, students will be expected to participate and document their attendance daily, complete all assignments, and be responsible for making up any missing work as a result of an absence.
Delivery of the curriculum is compatible with District technology (Chromebook, Google, Infinite Campus, etc.), which will be provided to students, along with WiFi capability as needed.
In addition to completing work Monday through Thursday during school hours, students will have the flexibility to complete asynchronous work in the evenings as well as weekends.
ELEMENTARY LEVEL
The Wonders Board-approved elementary literacy curriculum will be utilized in grades K-3 to comply with early literacy requirements. All Elementary students will be enrolled in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and special courses – which may include Art, Physical Education, Health and Social-Emotional Learning.
Printed workbooks in Core subjects will be issued to complement online materials.
Online lessons are interactive and contain video games, games, writing exercises, storytime (K-3) and sight words (K-2.)
Edgenuity offers a wealth of Elementary level supports, including text translation, text to speech, picture dictionary, word dictionary, reading text in a human voice, and the ability to stop and replay audio as needed.
It’s highly recommended that each elementary student have a “learning coach” in the home during the completion of the daily independent work. The learning coach could be a parent, guardian, grandparent, or other adult identified by the parent/guardian or family. The learning coach will be able to access Guides for each unit of study to help support the educational experience.
Although a licensed teacher will provide direct synchronous instruction daily through Google Meets, the District will not provide the recommended learning coach.
MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL
Middle School students will be enrolled in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, and assigned to elective classes, which may include Health, Physical Education, Art, Technology and Social-Emotional Learning.
Edgenuity Middle School supports include read-aloud, translations, transcripts of videos/audio, captions, videos, guided notes, glossary, calculator, and highlighters. Students may replay audio as needed and control the rate of speech.
Middle School students will receive synchronous direct instruction a minimum of 1 to 2 times each week. Synchronous learning may occur in large or small group online settings.
Middle School students will be able to participate in sports and extra-curricular experiences at their neighborhood school.
HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL
High School students will be enrolled in 6 or 7 NCAA-eligible courses each semester. A specific number of credits per subject will be determined by the student’s graduation pathway, with the completion of 24 credits required to qualify for graduation.
Course are available in all core academic subjects, including English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Elective courses may include Spanish, Art, Psychology, Sociology, Health/Fitness, and Technology.
Edgenuity provides an SAT-aligned one-semester “test prep” course which could quality as an elective.
During Year One, elective offerings will be limited in scope for staffing purposes.
Some Honors and Advanced Placement courses will be offered but likewise may be limited.
High School students will receive synchronous online direct instruction a minimum of 1 to 2 times each week, and synchronous learning may occur in large or small group online settings.
The following High School academic supports will be offered: read-aloud, translations, transcripts of video/audio, captions, videos, guided notes, glossary, calculator, and highlighters. Audio can be replayed as needed, with the rate of speech controlled.
Each course is composed of multiple units, which contain a warm-up activity, video instruction, a summary and application of instruction, an assignment and assessment.
High School students will be able to participate in sports and extra-curricular experiences at their neighborhood school.
At all three levels, students will receive teacher feedback and grades via Edgenuity. There are a variety of assessments that will be used to measure content and skills. Students will be required to participate in state tests (CMAS, PSAT, SAT) as well as identified District assessments.
Students on an Individualized Education Plan will receive support from a certified Special Education teacher in alignment with their IEP goals. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse learners will receive the required 45 minutes of daily oral language development instruction.
Students will be able to obtain individualized support by meeting with teachers during assigned office hours and/or during a scheduled meeting with a teacher. Counselors will be available to support both social-emotional needs as well as post-secondary planning.
Families will have access to a technology coach to troubleshoot related issues and D60 staff will provide all parents/guardians with training in navigating Edgenuity and monitoring their student’s progress. These trainings will be provided free of charge on multiple dates and times. It will be an expectation that at least one parent or guardian from each online family attend all trainings.
