Substitute teachers play a critical role in maintaining the continuity of instruction for our scholars. As guest teachers, substitutes have the responsibility of administering the absent teacher’s learning plan while keeping students engaged and involved.

The District needs substitute teachers at all grade levels. And to make this rewarding opportunity more appealing, the D60 Board of Education this week agreed to increase the pay for those who substitute, with incentives.

For those with a high school diploma (one-year substitute authorization), the daily pay has been bumped to $140 from $125.

For those enrolled in the Colorado State University Pueblo teacher program (one year authorization), the pay is now $145 per day, up from $130.

Holders of Bachelor’s degrees are eligible for a three-year substitute authorization, and will now be paid $160 a day, up from $140.

Long-term substitutes (12 or more consecutive days) with a three-year authorization will now make $175 a day, up from $155.

Those with a five-year substitute authorization (certified teacher/retiree) will earn $200 a day instead of the former $180.

And long-term substitutes with a five-year authorization will be paid $245 a day (formerly $225.)

Classified substitutes will now be paid $15 an hour.

The Board also approved the following bonus incentives:

The ideal substitute candidate is at least 21 years old, confident, professional, courteous and attentive, with good communication skills. Some experience working with youth is a plus.

The position is a good fit for retirees, college students, part-time workers, stay-at-home parents, and those with flexible schedules.

During Tuesday’s D60 Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Eric DeCesaro told the Board that per the increases, substitutes in the District will be making more than their counterparts in District 70.
