SALUTE TO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ALANA DURAN, EAST

ALANA DURANAlana received a Wake Forest University attendance scholarship, valued at $67,250 per year, and a Wakeware technology grant.

“The teachers that made the biggest impact in my life are Mrs. Maes and Ms. Goehringer,” Alana said. “Mrs. Maes has always encouraged us to learn more and to ask questions. She would make our four-person class fun and welcoming, and I loved to talk with her.

"In middle school, Ms. Goehringer taught me to dream big and was a large influence in my perseverance, commitment, growth, and large goals. She motivated me to push myself and try new things, which became a huge piece of my personality.”

At East, Alana’s favorite classes were Analysis and Applications, Theory of Knowledge and Spanish 4.

“I am a full IB student who played volleyball and tennis, and participated in National Honor Society as the NHS president, and Key Club. I also participated in DECA my junior year,” she said.

At Wake Forest, Alana plans to major in Marketing.

“I hope to be a marketer in the media and be known by people to make an influence or change, and I aspire for a role in representing women in business,” she said.
For those still making their high school journey, Alana has the following advice.

“Cherish the time and make those memories. High school is much more enjoyable when you're looking forward to events with the people around you. Time goes too fast, so speak now and make your mark.

“And always treat people with kindness and dream big. It's important to apply yourself and focus on your goals. Life is like walking, you take it one step at a time.”
