EAST FOOD TRUCK WARS BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN MOBILE DELICACIES
Taking a cue from reality fare like the Food Network's “The Great Food Truck Race,” students in Janae Passalaqua's ProStart and Culinary classes annually square off in a competition christened “Food Truck Wars.”
In this class assignment, Eagle culinary arts students are tasked with creating a mock food truck company that serves real meals.
The objective is to create tasty, accessible meals backed by a clever name and marketing campaign.
In a new twist, Jacqueline Armenta’s DECA students partnered with the food preparers by creating a marketing plan to maximize the impact of the dishes.
Members of the teams were tasked with verbally pitching their respective offering and answering any questions posed by diners.
In Round 1, five food trucks were rolled out to the staff of East High School, who were tasked with voting for best food items and business presentation:
- WAFFLE WAGON: Waffles with whipped cream and syrup, chicken
- SENTIENT SANDWICHES: Italian sausage panini
- HOLY CANNOLI: Italian cream-filled cannoli and pepperoni and cheese stromboli
- B IS FOR BURGER: Hamburgers
From that field, Holy Cannoli – Cade Markert, Grace Windon, Daniel Lucero, Valerie Orozco, William Rivera, Shelby Stevens and Mason Jubic Cole – emerged as the victor.
In Round 2, the following trucks went head to head:
- QUICK BITES: Sliders and loaded chili fries
- FROST BITE: Waffle ice cream sandwiches and milk shakes
- BLAST FROM THE PAST: 50s-themed wings, fries and milkshakes
- TOAST FOOD TRUCK: French toast with berries
Not only did Quick Bites – Zeniah Trujillo, Alexa Hernandez, Devin Dalton, Annabelle Baca, Isis Cervantes, Ashley Andrews, Candice Sandoval, Atiana Perez, Sebastian Montiel, Mary Tafoya and Shaniah Johns – win the round, the team captured the overall crown by earning the most votes in three categories: Best Food, Best Display, Best Sales Pitch.
