HURLIMAN SCHOLAR PROFILE: PAIGE FLORES
Paige, a Centennial Bulldog, received a one-year endowment up to $15,000.
“I believe I was selected for a Hurliman Scholarship for my service in the classroom, to my school, and my community,” Paige said. “I am involved in and lead many activities both in school and in the community, which shows my diversity in interests while maintaining above a 4.0 GPA throughout high school.
“I also have been awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Kansas University for my academics, as well as $1,000 through the Carson's Scholar Fund.”
Paige’s four years at Centennial have been filled with activities and achievements.
“Throughout high school, I have been involved in marching band -- flute and piccolo and drum major -- concert band on French horn and flute as first chair, jazz band as tenor one and trumpet one, and the musical pit on flute, piccolo, saxophone, and clarinet,” she said.
“I am a four-year varsity/competition cheerleader, and have been a part of Girls Cabinet as Assistant Head Girl, National Honor Society, National German Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Sources of Strength Peer Mentoring.”
Outside the walls of Centennial, Paige has generously given back to the community.
“I have participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life for many years, with my drive to fundraise heightened throughout high school after my 4-year old cousin passed away from cancer while I was in middle school, and my Mom was diagnosed in 2019,” she explained. “I have raised around $16,000 for the organization, with about $13,000 earned throughout high school and safely during the pandemic.
“After my cousin's passing, I created an organization to honor her where I make and deliver blankets for children with cancer. I have made over 150 blankets that have gone to children across the country and many in our community.”
News of Paige’s benevolence traveled to Germany, “which inspired generous families to help further my cause with donations,” she said.
Through the Miss Pueblo Scholarship Pageant, Paige has mentored young girls, guiding them in community involvement, public speaking, and the interview process.
For her service, Paige received the 2020 YWCA Tribute to Women Anna Taussig Young Leader Award.
Just as she has served as a mentor to many, Paige credits Centennial educators with positively impacting her life.
“My educators have had a great influence on the scholar I am. I have taken as many AP and honors classes as I can fit in my schedule throughout the years, which has allowed me to grow closer to my teachers, who push me in the classroom.
“Without my educators, I would not have the drive and inspiration to pursue college, especially in music, as they are all very supportive. I am very grateful to have had the opportunities I've been given in and out of the classroom by my mentors in extracurricular activities.”
At the University of Kansas, Paige plans to study Music Therapy.
