Josh Thatcher Credits Centennial with Transforming Him Into a Hurliman Scholar
In the classroom and fields – athletic, as well as agricultural – Josh Thatcher, knows what it takes to excel.
A 7-time Academic Letter recipient and multiple award winner in FBLA and football, Josh is one of three 2021 Hurliman Scholars from Centennial High School.
He plans to use his four-year award at Colorado State University, where he will study mechanical engineering.
As a Bulldog, Josh amassed an impressive resume.
In addition to his collection of Academic Letters, Josh is a 2-time State FBLA Champion who three times qualified for Nationals. Serving as president of Centennial’s National Honor Society, he is a long-time participant in Rake Up Pueblo – beautifying the yards of home-bound seniors – as well as food drives.
Active in 4-H, it was through that organization that Josh participated in the Beulah Fire Reseeding Project, ensuring that the natural beauty of that area would return after the devastation.
Together with lifelong friends Rick Lane and Bryson Arnott, also Centennial Hurliman Scholars, Josh serves on the Arianne Creative Arts Scholarship Fund Board, raising funds for endowments bestowed in memory of Rick’s late sister Arianne.
A versatile athlete, Josh is a 3-time All South-Central League selection in football who twice was named to the All-City Team and three times earned the Bruno DeRose Outstanding Lineman Award.
He also earned a spot on the All-Academic Basketball Team.
Through it all, he developed the traits and qualities that the Hurliman Scholarship Foundation looks for in its award recipients.
“I think all of my leadership roles that I have taken part in through FBLA, 4-H and National Honor Society helped contribute to me being named a Hurliman Scholar,” Josh said. “I was extremely excited to learn that I was going to be representing the Hurliman Family, and it was a big weight off my shoulders to realize I won’t have to be paying as much for college.”
As a Bulldog, Josh learned what it takes to achieve and sustain excellence.
“My years at Centennial were the most important years of my life,” he said. “I learned many life lessons and met some of the best people who have always supported me in what I do.
“Without Centennial, I don’t believe I would have been named a Hurliman Scholar.”
