UNITED WAY MENTORING PROFILE: DANIEL MUNIZ
Since its launch in 2012, United Way of Pueblo County’s Middle School Mentoring Program has been connecting positive and caring adults with young scholars in need of a trusted role model.
Through an hour of weekly communication – usually during lunch – mentors help mentees cultivate character and strength by fostering relationships centered on trust, hope, and growth.
In the District, mentors have been placed at Heaton Middle School, Pueblo Academy of Arts, Risley International Academy of Innovation and Roncalli STEM Academy.
Daniel Muniz, a realtor and home healthcare worker, is starting his ninth year in the program.
"I didn't have a mentor in my youth but definitely could have used one," Daniel said. "My negative school experience actually inspired me to become and coach and mentor. I do remember at least one coach who took an interest in me and helped to motivate me.
"I try to 'be the adult' I needed when I was a kid."
Through the program, Daniel has forged relationships that extend far beyond the weekly visit.
"I truly feel these relationships are extraordinary and lifelong. I am still in communication with my very first mentee and he is doing well."
For Daniel, a rewarding aspect of being a mentor is the opportunity to "view the world and today's 'problems' through the eyes of the mentees. This allows me to guide them and support them."
A key to building a fruitful bond is consistency.
"Absolutely, there is always growth as our relationship builds. The more consistency you have with a kid, the more trust they have in you. This allows for a very authentic and honest relationship."
For adults considering becoming a mentor, Daniel had this to say.
"I would encourage adults to be mentors because we all have something different to offer and we've all been through trials and tribulations in our lives. You never know what words of advice or compassion you can add to a kid's life just by showing up for them."
