PAA TEACHER NAMED A STEM TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Sharon Kok-Pollock, a math teacher at Pueblo Academy of Arts, has been named an Aerospace/STEM Teacher of the Year by Mel Harmon Chapter #128 of the Air Force Association.
Part of the Air Force Association’s mission is to promote aerospace and STEM education for a technically superior and professional workforce to ensure national security.
The Association’s Teacher of the Year program recognizes classroom teachers at the chapter and state levels for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting students about science, technology, engineering, and math, and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies.
Mrs. Kok-Pollock was recommended for the award by PAA Principal Albert Farias.
“I have observed Sharon’s dedication to teaching students of diverse backgrounds in middle school mathematics content,” Principal Farias notes. “Her dedication to her profession and her students is demonstrated by the time she puts into her lesson planning, delivery, and student feedback processes. It is not uncommon for Sharon to be in her classroom working with students after school hours on the content they are struggling to understand.
“Sharon actively engages in professional development opportunities to increase her effectiveness as a professional educator. She puts this professional development into practice and shares her learning with others in her content area.”
Principal Farias praised Mrs. Kok-Pollock as a “collaborative, positive, and outcome-oriented teacher who demonstrates her leadership in school by promoting mathematics instruction and demonstrating to students a true love for teaching and learning.”
Instrumental in the establishment of a MathCounts team at PAA, Mrs. Kok-Pollock has seen the team distinguish itself at competitions for the past three years.
“Sharon has put a smile on the faces of our students by providing a team-oriented approach to enjoying mathematics instruction and competition,” added Principal Farias. “The students and the community at our school are proud of the efforts Mrs. Kok-Pollock makes to meet the individual needs of our students and help them develop to their full potential in mathematics.”
Along with the honor that comes with being named a Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Kok-Pollock received a $250 check, a certificate, pin and padfolio, and complimentary Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education Membership.
