DISTRICT LEADERS GET EARLY LOOK OF NEW SUNSET PARK, FRANKLIN BUILDINGS
With ribbon cuttings for the new Sunset Park Elementary and Franklin School of Innovation set for August, Superintendent Charlotte Macaluso and members of her Leadership Team, along with the D60 Board of Education and Principals John Hull (Sunset Park) and Dana DiTomaso-Junkman (Franklin), were treated to walk-throughs of the buildings by construction and architectural leads.
Both schools, as well as the new Nettie S. Freed K-8 Expeditionary, were designed to meet the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) standards for school construction.
One of the features is a VRF HVAC system that provides constant tempered fresh air, and is the most energy efficient HVAC available. Additional features include LED lighting throughout the schools; occupancy sensor controls to avoid wasting energy on unoccupied spaces; use of daylight through the many windows and roof-mounted solar tube collectors; and metered water on all lavatory fixtures.
Each school has a TPO roofing system that offers a much longer lifespan, of up to 50 years. Additionally, there are advanced security features in each school, including bullet resistant glass and the ability for the grade classroom pods to lockdown automatically.
