SUNSET PARK NEWS PRODUCTION TEAM RECEIVES EQUIPMENT
The News Production Department at Sunset Park Elementary is growing, and now, the fourth- and fifth-grade Yearlings with a creative flair have new microphones, lights, video and still cameras, tripods, a teleprompter and related equipment to produce weekly news segments.
A grant application written by Sunset Park educators Layne Nicholas and Ashley Richardson was approved by the D60 Education Foundation, resulting in the broadcasting equipment being delivered to the school by Foundation representatives Dr. Henry Roman and D60 Board President Tommy Farrell.
“The importance of this production is to give students real life experiences that they can grow and expand on in the future,” notes the grant application. “These are skills students can use in reading, writing, technology and public speaking. Having students lead our school news helps them find their voice, gives other grades opportunities to be part of the news, and provides role modeling for all to experience.”
The Yearlings who produce the news segments fill various roles, including producer, director, reporter, on-air talent, writers and more.
In all, the Foundation has funded 10 projects, representing a financial commitment in excess of $10,000.
