Read Across America Day recognizes the value of literacy by celebrating books that inspire children to dream big, expand the limits of their understanding, and explore diverse perspectives and cultures through the eyes of others.The day also honors educators, parents, librarians, authors, mentors, and everyone who fosters the power of reading to open doors of opportunity and build greater awareness about the world around us.
Throughout the District this week, dignitaries including Mayor Nick Gradisar, firefighters and police officers, business owners, collegiate athletes and coaches, high school student leaders, Pueblo Bulls, and other community notables took a moment out of their busy schedules to read a book with our scholars while stressing the importance of literacy and the joy that comes with reading.
A number of schools hosted special events in conjunction with Read Across America Day.
At Irving, the book “Dream Street” led to a recreation of the events captured in the book, including butterfly-related activities, instruction on how to grow a plant from a seed, and jump roping.
Many of the scholars, and teachers as well, got into the spirit of the celebration, which coincides with the birthday of noted author Dr. Suess, by donning colorful attire based on characters from books such as “Cat in the Hat” and “Horton Hears a Who.”
Throughout the week, schools hosted various “Spirit Days” (Crazy Socks, Red and Blue, Wacky Wednesday, etc.) that added a touch of fun to the classroom learning.
