Governor Jared Polis and CiviCo, a nonprofit that cultivates civic-minded leaders, today announced the recipients of the 2022 Colorado Governor’s Citizenship Medals, given to people and organizations who inspire excellence and public service.
CENTRAL ALUMNUS MITCHELL MAURO HONORED BY GOVERNOR

Mitchell Mauro, a 2022 graduate of Central High School now attending the University of Colorado-Denver, received the Emerging Community Leader Medal.
That award acknowledges Mitchell as a young community leader who has demonstrated excellence and made a positive impact on his school and community.
"As a former student at Pueblo’s Central High School, Mitchell Mauro is committed to bringing young leaders' voices to the forefront," reads a press release from the Governor's office. "His accomplishments include serving on the Mayor’s Youth Council, Student Council Class Treasurer, DECA for four years, National Honor Society President, Branch Out Mental Health Club President and participating on the Pueblo Health Department Youth Advisory Board.
"Mitchell's presence on the Mayor's Youth Council amplified students’ point of view in the community; he was also instrumental in helping to develop programming for youth. He has created a strong legacy in his volunteer work for Holy Family Catholic Parish, while helping to create the SoCoYoGo website, which helps youth access pro-social businesses in Pueblo County."
Mitchell received a four-year Hurliman Scholarship, which he is using to pursue a degree in Finance.
Upon receipt of that scholarship, Mitchell praised the influence of Colorado GEAR UP, a federally funded pre-collegiate grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
“I would like to give recognition to those that have helped me along the way,” Mitchell said. “Colorado GEAR UP and the advisors who work tirelessly to ensure that we are successful in our futures are major proponents of me and everything that I do."
"We are so proud that CO GEAR UP and Central get to celebrate Mitchell and his receipt of such an esteemed award," said Jasmine Lopez, a GEAR UP Pre-Collegiate Advisor.
