Space in the Classroom

An astronaut holds up a toy shuttle as he talks with students

Through the Space in the Community program, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and astronaut Duane “Digger” Carey is this week sharing his experience and knowledge with our scholars.

A pilot of more than 35 different kinds of aircraft, including the Space Shuttle Columbia, Lt. Col. Carey logged more than 3.9 million miles on the shuttle, circling the earth 165 times.

The Yetis of Nettie S. Freed Expeditionary School joined colleagues from Goodnight School in engaging with Lt. Col. Carey, who stresses the importance of science and math literacy in his program.

"One of my true passions is to inspire children and young adults to reach beyond their perceived limits so they can successfully and confidently achieve difficult and significant goals," he said.
