Rattlers Study Esperanza Rising

Belmont Elementary School 4th and 5th grade students participated in a rigorous and engaging study based on the novel "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan. Once the novel was completed, students were tasked with creating personal projects -- ranging from crafts to food -- based on the themes of the novel.

"Some of the themes are resilience in the face of adversity, perseverance, the importance of family traditions, and community," said Principal Kylie Felzien. "The projects were filled with family traditions and why those traditions are important. Students also made connections from the novel to their personal experiences."

The end-of-novel projects were coordinated by 4th-grade teachers Deliza Klovas and Josie Padilla.
