The District’s Community Transition House is a program that teaches independent living skills to students 21 and older in order to prepare them for adulthood.

The skills students learn pertain to leisure, recreation, home maintenance, personal care and community participation, with an opportunity to continue their education under certified teachers.

Sixty five young men and women are part of the day program, which is overseen by two teachers, a transition coordinator, coaches and aides.

“We want to make sure these students can go into the adult world and function to the very best of their ability,” said Dr. Sandy Gecewicz, Director of Exceptional Student Services.

On Thursday, 9 members of the Community Transition House were rewarded for their academic dedication with a high school diploma, presented during a ceremony at the Lamb Branch Public Library.

“The students complete most of their studies while they are in high school, but they show their expertise through their skills, through their assignments, through the jobs the CT House gives them: and this becomes their final assessment,” Dr. Gecewicz said.

Thursday’s ceremony also served as a holiday party and dinner, with the guests treated to a festive yuletide meal and presented with gifts.
