Student Community Service

  • The Aim of Student Action and Service at CIMS:

    Service is an essential component of the International Baccalaureate Program. The emphasis of service at CIMS will be on the quality of service, rather than just the practice of counting hours. The goal of service is to embrace the learner profile attributes and help our students look outward at the world and their impact on it. 

    Community Service at CIMS will take place in three ways. Students will receive opportunities to learn about and take action in the classroom through units of inquiry, to focus on global themes and issues through MYP Advisory or PYP-IB Connections class, and finally, students are encouraged to take action outside of school as an extension of what they are learning.

     Specific learning outcomes for service are:

    - Undertake challenges that develop new skills

    - Discuss, evaluate and plan student initiated activities

    Action in the MYP

    Action, or learning by doing and experiencing,  is a key component of all IB programmes. Service is a part of Action and has always been a shared value of the IB community. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Corwin International Magnet School values service with others as an important way to engage in principled action across a range of overlapping local and global communities (MYP From Principles into Practice).

     

    Action in the PYP

    In the PYP, action has a specific meaning as an element of the programme. There is an expectation that inquiry within the classroom curriculum will lead to responsible action, initiated by the student as a result of the learning process. PYP schools can and should meet the challenge of offering all learners the opportunity and the power to choose to act; to decide on their actions; and to reflect on these action in order to make a difference in and to the world.

    It is believed that in the PYP every student has the right and should have the opportunity to be involved in action. This action may be taken by an individual student or by a group of students working collaboratively. The action component of the curriculum is a cycle of involvement that provides students with opportunities to engage in purposeful and beneficial action (Making the PYP Happen)
