D60: A tradition of champions

South High School

For more than a century, Pueblo School District 60 high school athletic teams have been in the spotlight, establishing a winning tradition that has culminated in 69 state championships to date.

Central has claimed 24 team state championships, followed by South with 23, Centennial with 15, East with six and the old Roncalli Catholic school with one state title. 

Quick facts about Pueblo state titles:

  • Girls state titles: To date, D60 schools have won 14 state championships in girls' sports. South's girls teams have claimed nine of those championships, including five by its girls basketball team (1979, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2013)
  • First girls champion: The first girls state champion in Pueblo was the East girls cross country team and the Central gymnastics team in 1978. 
  • Sustained football excellence: Beginning with Centennial's state football title in 1928, Pueblo schools have cumulatively won 13 state football championships, the most of any sport.  Central has five, Centennial has four, East three and South has one. Football is one of two sports (along with boys basketball) in which each Pueblo high school has won at least one state championship.
  • Repeat champions: Seven outstanding Pueblo sports programs have enjoyed runs of at least two or more consecutive state championships. The most recent "dynasty" is the East High School football team, winning three straight from 2014-16

    • South girls basketball, 1992-94
    • South wrestling, 2004-05
    • East football, 2014-16
  • The greatest sports dynasty in Pueblo history is: Centennial High School's boys cross country teams, winning five consecutive state championships (1969-73), and a total of seven state titles in an 11-year period from 1966-76.
