Student safety is the top priority of Pueblo School District 60
-
District 60 has policies and procedures in place designed to best ensure the safety of students and staff during situations of raised awareness or emergency.
In the event of emergencies, District 60 personnel will communicate with students, parents and staff using direct phone calls, e-mails, texts, and announcements via local media channels and social media.
For the safety of children and parents, some situations will require that District 60 follow a reunification process when parents pick up their child.
Emergency Procedures Explained
-
🚸 Evacuation
Students will be evacuated from a building when there is a significant danger such as a fire, smoke, gas leak, chemical spill inside the building. Students are asked to bring their phone, leave their stuff behind and follow instructions. Teachers are asked to lead evacuation to an announced location. District will communicate directly with parents via automated phone call.
-
🚔 Secure Perimeter
Secure perimeter means that all students and staff outside the building are brought inside, all exterior doors are closed and locked and normal activity continues inside the building. Because schools are placed on secure perimeter status, often for reasons unrelated to school activity, the District will not notify parents unless the situation is escalated to a lockdown.
-
🏫 Shelter in Place
Classrooms will be directed to shelter in place when there is a dangerous weather event, a reported tornado, or a hazardous material incident in the immediate area. District may notify parents via automated phone message and send a follow-up message when the shelter in place order is lifted.
-
🔑 Lockdowns
Schools will go into lockdown when there is a significant risk or dangerous person inside the building. Lockdown means teachers will follow procedures that include the closing and locking of doors, turning off lights, and ensuring all students are out of the view of doors and windows. District may notify parents via automated phone message if time allows, and will send a follow-up message when the lockdown order is lifted.
